ATLANTA – Sophomore Chelsea Regins recorded her first career double-double to lead the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team past Florida Gulf Coast, 58-48 Saturday afternoon at Alexander Memorial Coliseum at the Henry F. McCamish, Jr. Basketball Complex.
Regins finished with career-highs in points (11) and rebounds (16) for the Yellow Jackets. Her 16 boards were the most by a Yellow Jacket since Jan. 31, 2003.
“Chelsea’s been doing that pretty much all three games that we’ve played,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “She hasn’t gotten 16 rebounds but she’s made a big improvement from last year to this year. You saw today what she’s capable of doing, her hustle points, diving on the floor for loose balls, and coming up with big plays. But 16 rebounds is the most I’ve ever had a player get in one game.”
Sophomore Mo Bennett continued her strong start to the season, finishing with eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior Brigitte Ardossi added 13 points and nine boards in the victory.
A dismal shooting performance by the Jackets in the first half allowed Florida Gulf Coast to hold a 25-22 lead going into the locker room. Tech, who played its third straight game without injured junior Alex Montgomery, grabbed 25 rebounds to the Eagles 12 but shot only 29.8 percent from the field.
The Jackets opened the second half with a 9-1 run over the first six minutes to take their first lead since the 10 minute mark in the first half. Tech held the Eagles to only 20 percent shooting in the second half as it pulled away for the win.
Georgia Tech, who held a distinct size advantage over the Eagles, outrebounded Florida Gulf Coast, 60-26. It was the most rebounds by a Yellow Jacket team since grabbing 67 against USC Upstate on Dec. 6, 2007.
The Yellow Jackets will next travel to New York City over the Thanksgiving break to participate in the Long Island University Thanksgiving Tournament. Tech will face Seton Hall Friday, Nov. 27 in the first round beginning at 4 p.m.
