Athens, Ga. – Georgia Tech’s Nathan Rakitt and Daniel Yun each won both of their singles matches Friday on the opening day of the Bulldog Scramble at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Rakitt, ranked 76th in the nation, defeated his second ranked opponent of the fall when he took down No. 89 Nick Wood of Georgia, 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-1 in the afternoon. The junior from Marietta, Ga., defeated Van Damrongsi of Louisville in the morning session, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Meanwhile, Yun, a freshman from Marietta, Ga., downed two Cardinals Friday, first knocking off Santiago Salazar, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, in the morning, then coming back to defeat Pally Ray, 6-0, 6-2, in the afternoon.
Tech went 5-5 overall in singles Friday. Freshman Christopher Eubanks split his two matches on Friday, defeating Georgia State’s Jannis Koeke, 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-4, in the afternoon.
Both of Tech’s doubles teams lost close matches Friday to opponents from Kentucky. Eubanks and Rakitt fell in a tiebreaker to Jerry Lopez and Beck Pennington, while Yun and Elijah Melendez lost 8-6 to William Bushamuka and Trey Yates.
Saturday’s schedule begins with a round of doubles at 9 a.m. followed by a round of singles, and another round of singles beginning at 2:30 p.m.
Tech, Georgia, Georgia State, Kentucky, Louisville, Oklahoma and South Carolina have players in the competition. The format is no-ad scoring in singles and doubles, and a tiebreaker at 7-all in doubles.
