Question and Answer with Offensive Lineman Salih Besirevic

Sept. 7, 2005

What is something that most people don’t know about you?

“Most people don’t know that I’m from Bosnia and that I’ve only lived here for ten years.”

What would be your ultimate Sports Center highlight?

“It would have to be picking up a fumble against Georgia and as I’m running into the end zone, I would pitch it back to Brad Honeycutt. He would then run in, score a touchdown and do a Hulk Hogan pose while flexing his muscles.”

If you could exchange wardrobes with any player, who would it be?

Jacob Lonowski has some great Timberland Velcro flat sandals that I wouldn’t mind having.”

Tell about one visible scar…

“I have a scar on my nose from when I was five years old. My family was on vacation in Croatia and as we were walking by this playground, I decided to grab these bars and do flips over and over. Well at one point, I was trying to show off for my mom and my hands slipped. I fell head first and landed on this metal pole on the ground and broke my nose.”

If you could relive any single family outing in your life what would it be?

“Right before the war started in Bosnia in 1990, we went on vacation with four other families off of the Adriatic Sea in Croatia. I remember that we went windsurfing and my dad got us lessons so we could learn. It’s one of the toughest things to do because I was so young and not very big so the wind would just take me out to sea and it was very hard for me to control it. One guy had to actually come and get me on a jet ski because I couldn’t come back on my own.”

If you could have season tickets for any team, sitting in any place in the stadium, which team would it be and where would you sit?

“I would sit on the 50-yard line right behind the bench at the Denver Broncos’ game. Because I went to high school in Denver, I used to go to a lot of games to see the Broncos play and my brother also has season tickets so I try and go see them whenever I get a chance.”

Who’s had the greatest influence on you in your athletic career?

“I have an uncle in Bosnia who was a professional soccer player and always pushed me to play sports when I was younger.”

If you were forced to give up all of your possessions but one, what would it be?

“I would probably have to keep my Ford Explorer. There’s nothing special about it but I’m always driving around and on the move.”

What is your best non-athletic talent?

“Math. When I first came to the US, I didn’t speak English but working math problems was always easy for me. It just clicks in my head.”

What is the most valuable thing you’ve learned from being a college athlete?

“The one thing that sticks out in my mind is teamwork. I think it’s amazing that there are one hundred different guys on a football team, each with different personalities, and how we can bring all that together and play as one team. I think that’s a cool thing and it shows how far teamwork can take you.”

Do you have any pre-game rituals?

“I always start out by putting everything on the left side of my body before my right.”

What is the best thing about being a college athlete at Tech?

“Being an athlete in a prestigious program such as Tech gives you a feeling of pride. The fact that there’s so much tradition here makes me feel good and proud of attending Georgia Tech. I also enjoy living in Atlanta because I’m a big city guy. It’s a great combination.”

What has been the most memorable game that you have been a part of?

“Last year’s Clemson game was my favorite game while in college.”

What won’t you miss about being a college athlete?

“Early morning workouts. I dreaded getting up at 6:30 in the morning because my body just doesn’t function that early in the day.”

What is your all-time favorite meal?

“Roasted lamb with seasoned potatoes and cheesecake.”

What team would you add to the schedule?

“I would like to play the University of Colorado at their stadium because my parents live in Denver and wouldn’t have to fly two thousand miles to come and see me play.”

Latest CD that you bought:

“Actually, it’s probably a Bosnian CD with various artists on it.”

Favorite musical artist:

“Metallica.”

Favorite TV show:

“Seinfeld, especially because Kramer is one of my favorite TV characters.”

If there was another sport you could play at Tech, what would it be?

“I would definitely play basketball. I played it while growing up and I’d enjoy being able to play it again. I’m not sure if I could play center because I’m not tall enough but I would probably play power forward.”

Athlete you most admire:

“Growing up, I always admired Michael Jordan because I was a basketball player.”

Besides playing in the NFL, what are your plans after college?

“I’d like to get into commercial real estate and with the management degree that I’m pursuing at Tech, I think I’d have a great chance to do that.”

What is the thing you miss the most about living in Bosnia?

“I miss being around my family the most. I only have my parents and my brother here but the rest of the family is over there. Being around all of my cousins and doing the fun things that you do as a kid while growing up are the things that I miss the most.”

Name a professor that has had an impact on you here at Tech:

“Peter Vantine. He is a marketing professor and I’ve actually taken three of his classes while at Tech. He was very outgoing and would give me advice on how to improve my resume. It was very easy to approach him and to discuss any class or career related issues with him.”
