– GEORGIA TECH HEAD COACH Paul Hewitt
Opening Statement:
“I thought our guys came out and played with a lot more energy tonight. Toward the end of the week we started cutting down on some things in practice to make sure the guys would be fresh coming into the game. I told the guys in the locker room if you check all your personal goals in at the door, we have the chance to have a great team.”
On the impact of having Mfon Udofia and Iman Shumpert on the floor at the same time:
“You have two guys that are really up tempo players. But, more important for me is you have two guys that are going to try their best to lock down on the defensive end.”
On if the team was challenged in practice during the week after last Sunday’s overtime win over IUP:
“I really don’t know what happened on Sunday. I know it wasn’t because their mind wasn’t in the right place. Trust me, what happened on Sunday had me scratching my head. But, today was more of what we expect.”
On the Yellow Jackets’ next opponent – Dayton:
“We have a big test on Thursday. Dayton is one of the best teams in the country. They won a game last season in the NCAA Tournament against West Virginia. I’ve been saying all fall we’ll know a lot more about our team when we get back from Puerto Rico.”
On Derrick Favors:
“He’s such a low-maintenance guy. I can tell you a quick story. Yesterday he came into practice with blisters on his feet. We found out that his socks fell off and he was wearing an old pair that was causing irritation. But, the guy doesn’t say boo. He just comes to work every day and doesn’t ask for anything. He just wants to come in and just play. It’s nice when you have a guy that is that talented, but thinks about everybody else first.”
On turnovers in the game:
“We had 13 in the first half, but we only had five in the second half. In the first half, we had a lot of turnovers because we had shots and were trying to make an extra pass, which is nice. But, our point guards need to shoot the ball.”
