Post Game Quotes

June 1, 2002

2002 NCAA ATLANTA REGIONAL
Russ Chandler Stadium
Georgia 9, Coastal Carolina 7

Georgia head coach David Perno
“I thought it was the way we needed to win tonight. It gives us some momentum going into tomorrow. We got a lot of help from people off the bench ? definitely a team win tonight. We used a lot of pitching but a lot of them we didn’t use very long, so they’ll be able to return tomorrow. A good comeback win that showed a lot of resiliency.

“I thought Brandon Moorhead was definitely healthy enough to finish the ballgame, but that play up the middle kind of jarred his back out of place. That definitely put us in a bind, but we had all the confidence in the world in William [Sartain] and I know he’ll be ready tomorrow.”

[Tomorrow’s pitcher] “We’ve got Jason Fellows as a potential starter, Bill Sharpton is a potential starter, Bo Lanier, Chris Anderson, but I would say out of the gate it would be Jason Fellows.

“This was the way we needed to win. We needed to show that we have a little life and that we have some depth on our club. We have a lot of different options tomorrow. We throw everything we’ve got at them tomorrow in that first game because that’s the only game that matters right now.”

Georgia Pitcher William Sartain
“I hated to have to come in that way, but I’ve been told time and time again that my job is to come in and throw strikes and hopefully have them put the ball in play so the defense can take care of the rest.

“My last couple of outings haven’t been as strong as I would have liked. I didn’t travel to the SEC Tournament. To be put back on the roster this weekend and be able to perform well lifts me up and hopefully I’ll be able to continue.”

Georgia Third Baseman Lee Mitchell
“We had all the confidence in the world. We were swinging the bat well in the second game. We swung it well in the first game, but Goodman is a good pitcher. Coach just encouraged us to keep swinging.”

Coastal Carolina head coach Gary Gilmore
“Look at the scoreboard. If you are going to give up 18 hits and two errors, I don’t think you’re going to beat a whole lot of people. The main thing I was disappointed in was the pitching; I thought we could have done a better job. A couple of guys came out there and were very successful all year. Again, more credit goes to them (Georgia) than to us.

“We can continue to move forward and use that in a positive manner. I am proud of them and there is nothing negative about this experience.”

Coastal Carolina pitcher Adam Keim “The past two years we came to Regionals to compete and played some of the best schools in the nation.”
