Three Jackets Named Preseason All-ACC by Phil Steele

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech once again landed a trio of preseason all-Atlantic Coast Conference honorees from one of college football’s premier publications, as the 2023 Phil Steele College Football Preview has tabbed defensive back LaMiles Brooks (Jacksonville, Fla./Trinity Christian Academy), place kicker Gavin Stewart (Savannah, Ga./Benedictine Military Academy) and linebacker Trenilyas Tatum (Riverdale, Ga./Mt. Zion H.S.) for the recognition. Brooks is a Phil Steele second-team preseason all-ACC honoree, Stewart received third-team recognition and Tatum is on the fourth team.

A rising junior, Brooks led Georgia Tech with three interceptions and seven pass breakups and also ranked fourth on the squad with 52 tackles in his first season as a starter in 2022. He enters the 2023 campaign as college football’s No. 5-ranked safety, according to Pro Football Focus.

Also a rising junior, Stewart was one of the nation’s most consistent kickers after taking over the Yellow Jackets’ place-kicking duties five games into last season. He made his first 12 field goal attempts of the season, becoming the first Yellow Jacket in 40 years to make even 10-straight field goals to start a season. He finished the season 12-of-13 and his .923 field goal percentage ranked 10th nationally.

Another rising junior, Tatum is expected to play a big role for the Yellow Jackets in 2023 following the graduation of a pair of all-conference honorees at linebacker in Ayinde Eley and Charlie Thomas (now members of the National Football League’s Carolina Panthers and Cleveland Browns, respectively). Tatum racked up 31 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a forced fumble in a reserve role last season and has 43 stops in 23 career games.

With the honors from Phil Steele, a total of five Yellow Jackets have now received preseason all-ACC recognition from national publications. Last month, Brooks (second team), defensive lineman D’Quan Douse (third team) and  running back Dontae Smith (fourth team) were tabbed as preseason all-conference honorees by Athlon.
