ATLANTA – Micah Owings hit two three-run home runs to highlight a pair of seven run innings as Georgia Tech (16-11) defeated 13th-ranked Auburn (20-7), 20-5, on Tuesday evening at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Owings went 3-for-6 with a career high six RBI. Clifton Remole added three RBI and Brandon Boggs had three hits as the Yellow Jackets scored a season high 20 runs. Tech has won seven of its last nine games.
Tech starter Lee Hyde (2-1) earned the win in his third start of the year, allowing two earned runs in five innings of work. He allowed five hits and issued four walks while striking out four. Ryan Self worked two scoreless innings in relief, striking out four, and Aaron Walker pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
The Yellow Jackets struck for seven runs in the first inning, including Owings’ home run, his team-leading eighth of the year, and RBI singles from Wes Hodges and Whit Robbins. The first five hitters of the inning reached base safely and Tech sent 12 batters to the plate.
After Auburn scored twice in the second inning with a pair of sacrifice flies, Tech added two runs in the bottom of the inning on Steven Blackwood’s RBI single and Clifton Remole’s RBI groundout to make the score 9-2.
The Tigers pulled to within 9-4 with two unearned runs in the top of the third, but the Yellow Jackets stretched the lead to 12-4 with a sacrifice fly from Brandon Boggs in the third and RBI singles from Remole and Robbins in the fourth.
Tech sent 10 batters to the plate and scored seven more runs in the eighth inning, including Owings second three-run homer of the game and his ninth of the year. Jake Hall drove in two runs with a double, and Mike Nickeas added a RBI double in the inning.
Patterson had two hits and stole three bases in the game, while Remole, Blackwood, Robbins and Nickeas each had two hits.
Auburn starter Colby Paxton (2-2) took the loss after allowing five runs and not retiring a batter.
Georgia Tech hosts Miami for a three-game series this weekend at Russ Chandler Stadium. The series begins on Friday at 7 p.m., and continues on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. each day.
