NORMAN, Okla. – Georgia Tech men’s tennis was unable to grab a victory in the third-place ITA Kick-Off Weekend finale, falling to Northwestern, 4-1, on Sunday afternoon at Headington Tennis Center.
The Yellow Jackets (3-3) were unable to grab the doubles point as the Wildcats’ (2-2) team of Dominik Stary and Ben Vandixhorn downed Carlos Divar and Michael Kay, 6-4 at the No. 1 spot, while Chris Ephron and Michael Lorenzini defeated Phillip Gresk and Brandon Freestone, 6-1.
Daniel Yun and Elijah Melendez held a 5-4 advantage over Nick Brookes and Antonioni Fasano, however the match would go unfinished.
In singles, No. 85 Divar got back on the winning track by making quick work of Fasano in the first set, 6-0, before grinding out the straight-set victory in the second, 7-5.
C. Yun was unable to best Brookes at the No. 3 position, falling 7-5, 6-1, before Kay was defeated 6-3, 6-4 by Jason Seidman. Northwestern’s Ephron then downed D. Yun to seal the match for the Wildcats.
Despite being left unfinished, Gresk had battled to a 7-6(4) first-set win at the No. 4 before dropping the second, 6-3. Melendez also trailed 5-4 in the second set before his match was called.
Georgia Tech will have a week off before heading to the USTA College MatchDay event in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 9. The Yellow Jackets will take on archrival Georgia at 7 p.m.
