After suffering its first loss of the season, the No. 7 Georgia Tech volleyball team (23-1, 11-1 ACC) faces Duke Tuesday at 7 p.m. in O’Keefe Gymnasium in the first of three home matches this week. The match will be broadcast live on WREK radio (91.1 FM) and can be heard through audio streaming at www.wrek.org.
“Duke is a team that is very similar to Maryland in that they can frustrate you with their block and defense,” said head coach Bond Shymanisky. “They are a very gritty team and have dynamic athletes that when they are on can take teams down in a hurry. They beat a good Wake Forest team in three last week and they are certainly good enough team to beat anybody on any given night.”
Duke leads the all-time series between the two schools, 28-14, but Tech has won the last three meetings. The two teams met earlier this season in Durham, NC, with the Jackets winning in three games, 30-21, 30-23, 30-27. In that match, Lynnette Moster led the Jackets recording 15 kills and 12 digs while Jayme Gergen added 11 kills and six block assists.
“Duke will either take advantage of our self-doubt or feel the brunt of our unification and we won’t know which one it will be until after the match,” said Shymansky. “After being on the road, It will be nice to have our home fans and rely on our home gym to help us get back on a winning track that we hope begins on Tuesday.”
