ATLANTA – The sixth-ranked Georgia Tech baseball team will host in-state foe Georgia Southern for a two-game midweek series at Russ Chandler Stadium. First pitch for Tuesday’s game is set for 7 p.m., while Wednesday’s contest will begin at 4 p.m. Both games can be heard on WREK-Radio (91.1 FM in Atlanta) and on the internet at www.ramblinwreck.com.
The Yellow Jackets stand at 22-4 overall and 3-2 in the Atlantic Coast Conference following a three-game sweep of NC State last weekend in Raleigh. Georgia Southern is 21-10, including a 9-3 mark in the Southern Conference.
Georgia Tech is a perfect 14-0 in the newly rebuilt Russ Chandler Stadium in 2002, and the Yellow Jackets have a 19-game home winning streak dating back to the 2001 season.
The Yellow Jackets and Eagles are meeting for the third and fourth times this season, as Tech won two games in Statesboro (10-2 and 7-4) to open the 2002 season. The Yellow Jackets have won 15 straight in the series dating back to 1998, and Tech leads the overall series with Georgia Southern, 60-20.
Tech head coach Danny Hall will send freshman right-hander Kyle Schmidt (2-0, 1.69 ERA) to the mound on Tuesday night where he will be opposed by Georgia Southern sophomore righty Scott Tolbert (1-1, 6.29).
The Georgia Tech offense is led by senior shortstop Victor Menocal, who leads the team in batting (.426), hits (46), doubles (9) and runs scored (29). Catcher Tyler Parker and right fielder Jeremy Slayden are tied for the team lead with seven home runs apiece. As a team, Tech is batting .318 and averaging nearly nine runs per game.
