No. 3 Baseball Rallies Past Wake Forest, 18-11

ATLANTA – Jason Basil homered twice and drove in seven runs and Georgia Tech used an 11-run seventh inning as the third-ranked Yellow Jackets (29-8, 9-4 ACC) rallied to an 18-11 win over visiting Wake Forest (25-11, 9-7 ACC) on Friday night at Russ Chandler Stadium in the opener of a three-game Atlantic Coast Conference series.

Wake Forest jumped out to a 7-0 lead after three innings, but Georgia Tech scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to close within one. After the Yellow Jackets loaded the bases with no outs, Richard Lewis blasted a grand slam over the left field wall for his ninth home run of the year. Basil and Brad Stockton each added RBI singles.

A solo home run from Wake Forest’s Cory Sullivan made the score 8-6 in the sixth, but Tech erupted for 11 runs in the seventh to take command of the game. The inning was highlighted by a pair of three-run home runs from Basil, raising his total to nine for the season. Basil finished 3-for-5 with a career best seven RBI.

Tech starter Steve Kelly (6-1) picked up the win after settling down from a rough start. Kelly allowed eight runs on 11 hits in seven innings, although he allowed just one run in his last four innings of work. He walked two batters and struck out five.

Demon Deacon reliever Adam Hanson (4-2) took the loss after surrendering five runs on six hits in two innings.

Tech scored 18 runs on just 15 hits, but the Yellow Jackets were aided by two walks and seven hit batters. Lewis finished 2-for-4 with five RBI, while Brad Stockton added three hits in five at bats.

Wake Forest was led by Cory Slavik, who went 4-for-4 with four RBI while belting his ninth home run of the season. Ryan Johnson added three hits from the Demon Deacons.

Georgia Tech and Wake Forest will continue the three-game series on Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. each day at Russ Chandler Stadium. The games will be televised on Fox Sports Net South and broadcast on WREK-Radio (91.1 FM in Atlanta) and on the internet at www.ramblinwreck.com.
