No. 24 Tech Splits with Georgia Southern, 1-3 and 6-0

ATLANTA – Sophomore outfielder Amy Hosier hit a base clearing double in the bottom of the fifth inning in the nightcap to give the 24th-ranked Yellow Jackets (16-4) a spilt with Georgia Southern (8-4), 1-3 and 6-0, this afternoon at Glenn Field. Junior pitcher Jessica Sallinger (9-2) threw her sixth complete game shutout, scattering three hits and striking out 12.

In the opener, Tech took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning as senior outfielder Sara Wissmann drew a walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild throw by the Eagles’ catcher. Freshman first baseman Kristina Hull then walked and the Yellow Jackets pulled off a successful double steal.

The Rambling Wreck put runners on first and third with one out in the third inning as sophomore catcher Lauren Schlechte singled up the middle and advanced to second on an error and junior designated hitter Liz Bartle singled. Georgia Southern then induced an inning ending double play to hold Tech off the scoreboard.

The Eagles took the lead on Tech as Lindsay Jones walked and Katie Roberts singled. After a fielder’s choice, GSU’s Tiffany Urena hit a line drive that was dropped in the outfield which plated two runs as Tech trailed 2-1 after four innings.

Georgia Southern’s Cary Moone homered in the fifth inning to give GSU a 3-1 lead. In the sixth inning, Tech put its first two runners on base after consecutive singles by Hosier and Wissmann. GSU recorded two ground outs and a strike out to end the Yellow Jacket threat and beat Tech, 3-1.

Senior pitcher Erin Voeltz (7-2) threw all seven innings, allowing six hits, three runs, one earned run and struck out five.

Georgia Tech scored one run, on five hits and two errors, while Georgia Southern scored three runs, on six hits and three errors.

In the nightcap, Tech’s Soroya Reddick and Hosier started the game with singles in the first. Both of them advanced to second and third on an illegal pitch and Schlechte drove in the game’s first run on a sacrifice fly to center field as Tech led after one inning, 1-0.

The Jackets would put the game out of reach in the fifth inning as Tech scored five runs. Reddick drove in the game’s second run with a RBI single to left field with the bases loaded. Hosier then smashed a ball over the left fielder’s head for a bases clearing double to score three more runs. Hosier advanced to third base on a throw to the plate. The Eagles’ Moone entered the game in the circle for GSU. Senior Tara Knudsen welcomed the new Eagles pitcher with a RBI single up the middle to score the fifth run of the inning as Tech went on to down the Eagles, 6-0.

Reddick, Hosier and junior Katie Donovan led Tech offensively in game two. Reddick finished 2-for-4, with an RBI, Donovan went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Hosier finished 2-for-3, with three RBIs and a double.

Tech scored six runs, on seven hits and no errors, while GSU had no runs, on four hits and one error.

The Rambling Wreck will travel to Tucson, Ariz., for the Hillenbrand Invitational, March 5-7. Tech will face UTEP, North Texas, No. 2 Arizona, Northern Iowa and Indiana in the round robin tournament.
