ATLANTA – Fresh off a sweep of archrival No. 22 Georgia, 5-4 and 4-1, on Wednesday, the 24th-ranked Georgia Tech softball team (31-10, 3-3 ACC) will host No. 23 North Carolina (34-8, 6-0 ACC), winners of 27 straight, for a huge Atlantic Coast Conference softball three-game series this weekend. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and single game on Sunday, both days beginning at 1 p.m. at Glenn Field.
The Yellow Jackets are 6-2 versus ranked opponents this year. Tech and UNC are tied with 21 wins apiece in the all-time series, with the Jackets winning 10 of the last 15 game since 2002.
Tech boasts the ACC’s top offense and is tied with Arizona State with 50 home runs, tops in the NCAA. Tech leads the ACC in batting average (.327), on base percentage (.403), slugging percentage (.527), runs scored (273), doubles (53), triples (11), total bases (593), walks (127), RBI (258) and stolen bases (62).
Senior Caitlin Lever continues to put up impressive numbers more than halfway through the season. She leads the ACC in batting average (.528), hits (65), doubles (12), RBI (48), on base percentage (.600) and slugging percentage (.870).
In the circle, sophomore Tiffany Johnson leads the Jackets, posting a 13-4 record and a team-low 2.33 ERA. She ranks third in the ACC with 8.67 strikeouts per game.
The Tar Heels are third in the league in team batting (.288) and earned run average (1.79). UNC is led in the circle by Lisa Norris who is 19-6, and holds the ACC’s fourth-best ERA at 1.57.
The Yellow Jackets will hit the road for a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, April 4, at Furman. Those games are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start. All Tech games can be followed via live stats on www.ramblinwreck.com.
