No. 23 Tar Heels Take Series From No. 24 Jackets, 6-4

ATLANTA – North Carolina’s Lisa Norris (22-6) tossed her 10th complete game of the season and smacked a two-run home run to lead the 23rd-ranked Tar Heels (36-9, 8-1 ACC) to an Atlantic Coast Conference series win over No. 24 Georgia Tech (32-12, 4-5 ACC), 6-4, on Sunday at Glenn Field.

Junior Whitney Humphreys (13-5) worked 4.2 innings, allowing five hits, four earned runs and struck out one. Sophomore Tiffany Johnson tossed the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one hit, two runs, no earned runs and fanned three.

Sophomore Whitney Haller led the offensive attack for the Jackets, going 2-for-3, with two runs batted in and hit her 10th home run of the season. Sophomore Blair Shimandle added two hits for Tech and sophomore Jennifer Yee drove in a run.

The Jackets used the long ball to take an early 1-0 lead as Haller blasted her ninth home run of the season to center field in the bottom of the first inning.

The Tar Heels used a two-run home run by Lisa Norris in the top of the fourth inning to take their first lead of the game, 2-1.

Carolina grabbed a three-run lead in top of the fifth inning on a leadoff home run by Whitney Allen and an RBI double by Casey Testa as Tech trailed 4-1. The Jackets’ Hull homered in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to two, 4-2.

UNC extended its lead back to four runs on a two-out dropped fly ball in left field after back-to-back walks and a sacrifice bunt as the Jackets trailed 6-2.

The Jackets made a valiant effort on a comeback loading the bases with one out for Yee. She drew a walk to bring Haller to the plate who had already homered in the game. She hit a deep fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly, but junior Savannah Brown popped up to second base to end the game 6-4.

Tech scored four runs, on six hits and committed one error, while UNC scored six runs, on eight hits and had no errors.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Furman, S.C., for a non-conference doubleheader against the Lady Paladins this Wednesday. Game time is at 2 p.m. and can be followed on www.ramblinwreck.com.
