ATLANTA – The 20th-ranked Georgia Tech softball team (27-9, 1-2 ACC) will host No. 23 NC State (20-11, 2-1 ACC) in a huge Atlantic Coast Conference three-game series this weekend at Glenn Field. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 1 p.m., and a single game on Sunday, starting at Noon.
The Yellow Jackets continue to lead the nation with 49 home runs and stand third in the country, scoring 7.00 runs per game. Tech looks to get back to form this weekend after dropping four of its last five games.
All-American candidate Caitlin Lever continues to lead the Jackets and the ACC in most offensive categories. Lever, a senior from Amherst, N.Y., is batting .550, with 12 doubles, eight home runs and 48 runs batted in. She carries a league-best .611 on base percentage and an impressive .936 slugging percentage.
In the circle, the Jackets are led by junior Whitney Humphreys. Humphreys, a native of Shady Spring, W. Va., leads the team with 11 victories, fourth best in the ACC, and has an ERA of 2.50.
The Wolfpack showcase two of the best pitchers in the ACC in Abbie Sims and Shaina Ervin. Sims (12-3) was named National Player of the Week and ACC Co-Player of the Week after throwing a no-hitter against No. 2 Oklahoma and beating No. 5 Arizona State, and ranks second in the league with 9.87 strikeouts per game. Ervin (7-7) is the team’s leader in ERA, boasting a low 1.70 mark, fourth best in the ACC.
The Jackets continue to be the league’s most potent offense. Tech leads the ACC in batting average (.327), on base percentage (.405), slugging percentage (.549), runs scored (252), hits (320), doubles (48), triples (11), home runs (49), RBI (233), walks (113) and have the most stolen bases (58).
The first 75 fans to Saturday’s contests will receive a free Chick-fil-A sandwich. All Tech games are free admission and can be followed on www.ramblinwreck.com.
