KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 19/18 Georgia Tech (44-11) will play Liberty (30-29) at 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon in an elimination game of the NCAA Softball Knoxville Regional. The winner of the game will move on to play the loser of today’s game between No. 14 Tennessee (48-10) and Oklahoma State (38-17) at 7 p.m. tonight.
The Yellow Jackets are coming off a 2-1 loss to Oklahoma State last night after a two-out, walk-off RBI single by Julie Ward in the bottom of the seventh inning. Liberty suffered an 8-0 loss in five innings to the hands of host-school Tennessee in front of the sixth sell-out crowd of the season at Lee Softball Stadium. UT pitcher Ivy Renfroe tossed a no-hitter as the Lady Vols scored seven runs with two outs in the fifth inning, capped by a walk-off grand slam off the bat of Madison Shipman.
Freshman Lindsey Anderson (12-1) took the loss for the Yellow Jackets as she went the distance allowing two runs on six hits in her first career postseason start. She walked four (one intentional) and struck out seven. Kat Espinosa (21-7) got the win for the Cowgirls as she scattered four hits and struck out four. She did not walk a batter and the run she allowed was unearned.
The winner of the loser’s bracket will move on to tomorrow’s Knoxville Regional championship at 2 p.m. against the winner of today’s UT/OSU game. The team that comes out of the loser’s bracket would need to win twice on Sunday. The “if necessary” game is set for 4:30 p.m.
