ATLANTA – Matt Murton, Micah Owings and Tyler Greene all homered and Kyle Bakker tossed six shutout innings to lead top-ranked Georgia Tech to an 11-1 win over a team of Georgia Tech alumni in an exhibition on Saturday afternoon at Russ Chandler Stadium.
Bakker, who will start on opening day next weekend, went six innings and allowed just two singles. He issued one walk and struck out four batters. Micah Owings tossed two shutout innings of relief.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after Eric Patterson and Brandon Boggs led off the game with back to back singles and then scored on RBI groundouts from Jeremy Slayden and Matt Murton. A solo home run from Greene gave Tech a 3-0 lead in the second inning. Boggs walked and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Micah Owings to make the score 4-0 in the third inning.
Tech scored two more runs in the fourth inning on RBI singles from Greene and Patterson. Murton added a solo home run in the fifth inning and Owings hit a solo shot in the seventh to make the score 8-0. The Yellow Jackets added two more runs in the seventh on a two-run single from Cameron Lane, pushing the lead to 10-0.
The alumni team broke up the shutout with a RBI single from Wes Rynders in the top of the ninth inning. A RBI double from Mike Trapani in the bottom of the ninth inning provided the final 11-1 margin.
Greene finished the game 3-for-3 with a home run, triple and a stolen base while Patterson went 2-for-3.
