Athens, Ga. – Eliot Potvin and Austin Roebuck each won in singles and doubles Friday, and Georgia Tech completed an undefeated day with two other singles victories at the weather-delayed Southern Intercollegiate Tennis Championships at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
All-American Guillermo Gomez (Alicante, Spain), the No. 3 seed in the first flight, made short work of Kennesaw State’s Gokalp Ozdemir, 6-0, 6-3, and 11th seed Dean O’Brien (Benmore, South Africa) dispatched Charlie Ramsey of Memphis, 6-3, 6-3.
Potvin, a junior from Hampden, Maine, scored an upset Friday in the first flight by taking out the No. 16 seed, Romain Bocaert of South Alabama, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, and Austin Roebuck won his first-round match in Division II with a 7-5, 6-4 decision over Joe Nicolazzi of Memphis.
Roebuck and Potvin later teamed to defeated William John and Timion Meijs of UNC-Greensboro, 8-1, the only one of Tech’s four doubles teams to play Friday.
“The weather was rough today, but once we got on the court, the guys performed well,” said head coach Kenny Thorne. “To see the guys implementing what we work on is nice, and to be winning doing so is even nicer. We have a very tough day of matches for everyone tomorrow so I look forward to seeing where we stand as a team after tomorrow.”
Sophomore Kevin King (Peachtree City, Ga.), who was Tech’s fourth player entered in Division I singles, withdrew before competition began with tendonitis in his shoulder.
Sophomore Dusan Miljevic (Novi Sad, Serbia), seeded 8th in Division II, juniors Doug Kenny (Roswell, Ga.), Ryan Smith (Marietta, Ga.) and Miguel Muguruza (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), and freshman Magin Ortiga (Cartagina, Columbia) were not able to get their round of 64 matches in Friday in Division II and will play their opening matches Saturday along with the rest of Tech’s doubles teams.
