Elon advances to play the loser of tonight’s Georgia Tech-Southern Mississippi game tomorrow at 3 p.m., while Georgia State is eliminated from the NCAA Atlanta Regional.
ELON (41-17)
2B Bennett Davis’ first-inning home run was his fourth in his first two games of the NCAA Atlanta Regional. Davis, who went 4-for-4 with three homers yesterday, hit four home runs in his first five at bats of the regional.
Davis reached base safely in each of his first six plate appearances of the Regional before finally making an out in the fourth inning.
Starting pitcher Jimmy Reyes set a new career high with 14 strikeouts, his 4th double-figure strikeout game of the season. Reyes previously struck out 13 batters on May 1 vs. Wofford.
Reyes raised his season strikeout total to 101, and becomes just the fourth player in Elon history to record a 100-strikeout season.
Reyes (8-0) earned his first win since April 24 vs. Samford, snapping a streak of four straight no-decisions.
The Phoenix hit two home runs today, adding to their NCAA-leading total. They have hit 137 home runs in 2009.
GEORGIA STATE (39-22)
Starting pitcher Ryan Moore, who allowed four runs in seven innings, suffered his first loss since March 6 vs. Xavier (a streak of 10 starts without a loss).
RF Matt Van Horn played in his 60th game of the season today, setting a new Georgia State record.
Georgia State played its 61st game today, a school record.
DH Derek Simmons hit his 13th home run of the season, moving him into a tie for 9th place on the school single-season list.
LF Michael McCree extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
3B Marc Mimeault’s fourth-inning double gave him 77 hits for the season, tying him for second on Georgia State’s single-season list. The school record is held by Bradley Logan (85 in 2008).
