THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis sophomore Nami Otsuka was tabbed the ACC Player of the Week on Tuesday after going 4-0 in a pair of wins for the Yellow Jackets over the weekend. Tech upset No. 1 North Carolina and downed then-No. 42 NC State in a pair of league matches.
Otsuka was paramount in Tech claiming a 4-3 win over North Carolina in Chapel Hill as the sophomore was victorious in doubles play and claimed a straight-set singles win. Partnered with Johnnise Renaud, the doubles tandem defeated Makenna Jones and Sara Daavettila, 6-4, from the No. 3 seed to guide Tech to clinching the crucial doubles point. In singles play, Otsuka put Tech up 3-0 in the match, downing No. 47 Jessie Aney from the five seed in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
On Sunday, Otsuka completed a sweep of her matches on the weekend, picking up another pair of wins against NC State. Otsuka and Renaud cruised to a 6-2 victory in doubles play before Otsuka closed out the match with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph over Taya Stenta in singles action.
Otsuka owns an 18-6 overall singles record on the season, including a 12-3 dual mark and 5-1 ACC ledger. In doubles play, Otsuka and Renaud boast a 3-0 mark.
The weekly honor is the first weekly honor for Otsuka and second for the Jackets this season; senior Renaud earned the recognition the week of Feb. 27.
QUOTABLE: “Nami is so deserving of this honor. She played extremely well against both teams over the weekend.” – head coach Rodney Harmon
