The Mount St. Mary’s women’s basketball team defeated the Winthrop Eagles, 80-70, in Game 2 of the Atlanta Marriott Northwest Classic this afternoon at O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Mount was led by Ravilia Alexander (18 points, five rebounds), Beth Foster (17 points, nine rebounds) and Kia Williams (14 points, 11 rebounds).
Mount St. Mary’s (1-2) shot just 36 percent from the field but played scrappy defense and forced 31 Winthrop turnovers. The Eagles trailed throughout the game, but cut the lead to five with 1:21 remaining. The Mount, which shot 81 percent from the free throw line, nailed its final eight free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Winthrop, which fell to 0-3 with the loss, was led Tracy Aragon (18 points), Meredith Smith (17 points, 13 rebounds) and Charlotta Wennefors (13 points, three assists).
