Moss, Miller Lead Tech at Diet Pepsi Invitational

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Shantia Moss clocked a NCAA provisional time of 7.61 in the women’s 55-meter hurdles and Jerome Miller had a NCAA provisional mark of 7 feet, 1 inch in the men’s high jump to lead the Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams at the Diet Pepsi Invitational on Saturday.

Moss, a junior from Tamarac, Fla., ran a time of 7.60 in the preliminary round of the 55m hurdles and a time of 7.61 in the finals. Moss also placed fourth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.56.

Miller, a junior from Stafford, Va., finished third with his mark in the high jump. Sophomore Juan Cave cleared the bar at 6 feet, 11 inches to place fifth in the high jump.

Freshman Carola Conces and sophomore E.C. Gibbs had a pair of 11th place finishes. Conces ran a team season-best time of 10:23.82 in the women’s 3,000-meter run. Gibbs finished the men’s 800-meter in 1:56.30.

Junior Nisha Kurian crossed the line third in the women’s mile with a time of 5:04.68. Fellow junior Elena Linn followed in sixth with a time of 5:06.41. Kurian and Linn were joined by junior Antoinetta McKay and senior Jenny Sims to place second in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 12:02.51.

The men’s DMR team including Herren, Gibbs, junior Derek Hoye and senior Cristan Duvall placed third overall with a time of 10:38.92.

Senior James Lemons and freshman Alphonso Jordan tied for third in the men’s long jump, each landing at 23 feet, 2 ½ inches.

Sophomores Alana Clooten and Kimery Hern placed sixth and 10th overall respectively in the women’s weight throw. Clooten had a mark of 59 feet, 11 inches in the event, while Hern had a season-best throw of 49 feet, 5 inches.

Sophomore Steve Marcelle had a season- and personal-best toss of 57 feet, 7 inches to place fourth in the men’s shot put. Junior Andy Powlen had a mark of 54 feet, ½ inch to finish in sixth place. Sophomore Charles Rohling set a new season- and personal-best mark in the men’s weight throw with a toss of 54 feet, 2 inches for a seventh-place finish.

The Yellow Jackets will compete in the Meyo Invitational, Feb. 2-3, in South Bend, Ind., on the campus of Notre Dame.
