ATLANTA (AP) – Anthony Morrow scored 16 points and freshman guard Lewis Clinch added 14 points off the bench to lead five Georgia Tech scorers in double figures and the Yellow Jackets coasted to an 81-69 win over Elon Monday night.
The Yellow Jackets (2-0), who started four sophomores and a junior, lost all five starters from last season’s 20-win team that lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Sophomore Morrow led those returning with 5.7 points a year ago.
The other Yellow Jackets in double figures were sophomores Ra’Sean Dickey with 13 and Zam Fredrick with 12 and junior Mario West with 11.
Tech, whose biggest lead was 22 points at 46-24 late in the opening period, led 53-34 at halftime with Morrow scoring 14 of his 16 points and Clinch adding 10.
The Yellow Jackets broke it open midway in the opening half.
Leading 15-13, Tech went on a 22-4 run with Morrow scoring nine points for a 37-17 lead with just over seven minutes left before intermission.
Elon (1-1) was led by Chris Clalko, who had 16 points, 12 in the first half. Scottie Rice added 14.
Georgia Tech shot 25-for-53 (47 percent) from the field, but made only 7-of-19 in the second half after hitting on 18-of-34 (53 percent) in the opening half.
Elon’s defense was much better in the second half, but the Phoenix never got closer than 10 points at 75-65 on a pair of free throws by Brian Waters with 2:25 left.
Clinch then made four free throws and Fredrick added two down the stretch to maintain the lead.
