GREENSBORO, N.C. – No. 14 Georgia Tech volleyball (23-5, 14-4 ACC) received a pair of the final weekly awards released by the Atlantic Coast Conference as senior middle blocker Breland Morrissette was named ACC Co-Player of the Week while freshman outside hitter Bianca Bertolino was tabbed ACC Co-Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday.
Morrissette’s honor marks her first career ACC Player of the Week recognition, while Bertolino has now garnered a league-leading five ACC Freshman of the Week selections.
The Jackets have now racked up 12 ACC weekly awards on the year, the most in program history on record. The staggering tally leads the league this season as junior outside hitter Julia Bergmann has garnered four ACC Player of the Week honors of her own while senior outside hitter Mariana Brambilla has raked in two ACC Player of the Week recognitions as well. Georgia Tech has had at least one recipient of an ACC weekly award in eight of the 14 weeks the conference has recognized winners this season.
Morrissette was borderline unstoppable in the middle of the Jacket attack, powering Tech to a flawless final regular season weekend with sweeps of Clemson and Florida State. Approaching career highs on the attack, Morrissette tallied 19 kills at a gaudy .783 clip for 3.17 kills per set along with a pair of digs and a solo block through the weekend. Against Clemson, she reached double digit kills with 10 at a robust .693 hitting percentage. Her 10 kills tied for second on the team, and the .693 clip was the highest on the squad with five or more attacks. At Florida State, the Birmingham, Ala., native came away with nine kills at an astounding .900 clip, finishing third on the team in kills and earning the ninth highest individual hitting percentage with at least 10 attempts in a match in the country this season.
Bertolino was once again a driving force behind Georgia Tech’s flawless weekend, also helping the Yellow Jackets close out the regular season with a pair of sweeps. The Argentinian contributed across the board in both contests, totaling 24 kills (second on the team), 22 digs (tied for the team lead), a team-high five aces, two assists and two total blocks (one solo, one assisted). She first tallied 10 kills, nine digs, two aces, an assist and a block assist against the Tigers as her kill and dig totals were both the second-highest marks on the team, and her pair of aces tied for the team lead. The decorated freshman kicked it up a notch in the regular season finale of her freshman campaign, earning 14 kills, 13 digs, three aces, an assist and a solo block against the Seminoles. She once again finished second on the squad in kills and digs while leading the way in aces.
