Morris, Yates Elected to Atlanta Sports Hall

THE FLATS – College football Hall of Fame member George Morris and British Amateur golf champion Charlie Yates are two of five Atlanta sports luminaries who make up the 2015 class of the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame, which will be inducted Feb. 6 at the 11th annual induction and awards ceremony.

The two former Georgia Tech All-Americans will be inducted Feb. 6, 2015, at the Buckhead Theater along with former Atlanta Falcons head coach Leeman Bennett, Marietta High School and Tennessee basketball All-American Dale Ellis and two-time Paralympic medalist Al Mead.

George Morris, who passed away in 2007 and is being inducted posthumously, played football for Coach Bobby Dodd at Georgia Tech in early 1950s. Morris was the 1952 Tech football captain and led the Jackets to a perfect 12-game season, climaxed by a 24-7 triumph over Mississippi in the Sugar Bowl. Morris also was a SEC Football head linesman official for over 20 years.

A graduate of Atlanta’s Boys High School and Georgia Tech, Yates won multiple golf championship as an amateur including: Georgia Amateur (1931 and ’32), NCAA individual title (1934), Western Amateur (1935), and British Amateur (1938). Yates played in the first Masters in 1934, and was the low scoring Masters amateur five times.

Morris and Yates join 11 other former Georgia Tech standouts in the Atlanta Sports Hall of Fame. Previous inductees include Tommy Barnes, Bobby Cremins, Bill Curry, Bobby Dodd, John Heisman, Bobby Jones, Roger Kaiser, Antonio McKay, Mark Price, Dr. Homer Rice and Randy Rhino.

The Awards and Induction Ceremonies for the class of 2015 will be held, Friday, February 6, 2015, at the Buckhead Theater. The evening’s festivities, which include a reception, silent auction and a parade of past inductees, concludes with the awards and induction ceremony.
