ATLANTA – Georgia Tech senior defensive end Michael Johnson and sophomore safety Morgan Burnett were named third team All-Americans today by Phil Steele’s Magazine. The Tech duo is among 12 ACC honorees on the four All-American teams.
Johnson, who was recently named an American Football Coaches Association first team All-American, has 43 tackles (26 solo) while leading the team in sacks (7.0) and tackles-for-loss (15.0).
The Selma (Ala.) native has two forced fumbles, seven pass break-ups and has also returned an interception for a touchdown (vs. Miami). Johnson, who was a 2008 finalist for the Bednarik (nation’s top defensive player) and Hendricks (nation’s top defensive end) Awards, was named to first team All-ACC earlier this month as well.
Burnett is tied for the NCAA lead in interceptions with seven, including a 35-yard INT return for a touchdown against Georgia Nov. 29. The College Park (Ga.) native leads the Yellow Jackets in tackles (79) to go with 5.5 tackles-for-loss, eight pass break-ups and a forced fumble. He was also a second team All-ACC pick.
The No. 14 Yellow Jackets are preparing for the 2008 Chick-fil-A Bowl against LSU, New Year’s Eve at the Georgia Dome (7:30 p.m./ESPN).
