MERCER COACH CRAIG GIBSON
Opening Statement:
“I am so happy for these guys. They stayed with us and fought hard. It took us seven years to get to this stage and I think we competed well once we got here. We won yesterday and fought hard today. You just can’t say enough about these guys.”
On the competition level:
“We really don’t worry about the jersey. We just go out and play hard everyday. These two guys [Michael Langley and Lath Guyer] could play in any conference for any team in the country. Hopefully, we proved that and we made Mercer proud and we will be back next year.”
On the team next year:
“We are excited about next year. We have a lot of great guys on the team coming back. We have signed some guys. I think we will be the hunted next year. We just have to continue to get better. In a few days, our guys will go off to summer ball and work and work and work. We will start over again in August and, hopefully, we will be back here again next June.”
On potentially having to play two games on the day:
“We were excited about hoping to play tonight at seven. We were putting everything into the 3 o’clock game. We really didn’t look ahead much. We were firing all of our bullets at 3 p.m. today. If we would have made it to 7 p.m., we would have regrouped to try to have a shot at the Yellow Jackets. It is a great team and a great club. They have done something that no group has ever done. I told them early in the year `What is your legacy going to be?’ Their legacy is they are going to be the best guys to have ever worn this uniform.”
MICHAEL LANGLEY, Sr., 2B
On Mercer’s offensive performance:
“I thought we fought hard today. We just didn’t get the breaks when we needed them. We proved we could swing it against any team in the nation.”
On Mercer’s performance in the NCAA Regional:
“We are real proud. There are really no regrets or disappointments for the season. We accomplished the goal we set out to accomplish to win the A-Sun. We came here and won a game and played well against Alabama today. There are no regrets with the season, it was a great one.”
On the biggest surprise of the overall tournament:
“I don’t think anything really surprised me. I think we surprised some people which was the main thing. We had a chance to tie and win it at the end today. I feel like we can go toe-to-toe with that team any time.”
LATH GUYER, Sr., RHP
On his performance:
“I felt great. I was happy my name was called and I got to pitch against Alabama for a chance to play Georgia Tech tonight.”
On the Mercer falling just short:
“I think that second inning when they put the four-spot up hurt us. They had some bleeders and some bloops that just fell in. I think that [Justice] French pitched well. I just came in to do my job. Russell [Moses] and J.T. [Odom] pitched well and we hit well. Just a few more timely hits and a couple of more lucky bounces for us and we had that one won.”
On the pitching staff:
“We got on that hot streak and we were pitching and hitting really well. It brought everyone together because our bull pen is used so much. We are starters by committee. We always know that one of our names is going to get called. We just have to go in and do the job and try to help our team win.”
