GREENVILLE, S.C. – Both Georgia Tech’s men’s and women’s cross country teams finished second Saturday at the 43rd annual Gene Mullin Furman Cross Country Invitational held on the Furman University Golf Course.
The Furman Invitational was a late schedule edition earlier this week after Georgia Tech canceled its participation in the Upstate Invitational (Oct. 3) due to inclement weather.
On the women’s side, all eight Yellow Jackets runners finished in the top 25, with five finishing among the top 15. Courtney Naser paced the Jackets with a time of 19:51.52, finished seventh. Paige Selent (19:56.11) finished ninth, while Malin Trollsas (20:11.30) placed 12th and Erin Gant (20:19.91) 15th.
“We had some good performances today and got what we needed out of the meet,” head coach Alan Drosky said. “The course ran very slow with the ground already saturated from last week, then it rained all night and morning. So it was difficult to run fast but both teams competed hard.”
Chris Burnett led the way for the men, finishing seventh with a time of 16:08.48. Avery Bartlett, who ran unattached, finished eighth with a time of 16:15.77. Six other Yellow Jackets finished in the top 20 – Tanner Shaw (10th, 16:18.71), Christian Bowles (13th, 16:26.18), Witt Nix (16th, 16:32.72), Alex Dunlap (18th, 16:34.30), Justin Weaver (19th, 16:40.25), and Miles Dayoub (20th, 16:43.44).
Georgia Tech will travel to Louisville, Ky., for the Pre-National Invitational on Oct. 17, its final tune-up before the 2015 ACC Cross Country Championship held Oct. 30 in Tallahassee, Fla. Per Coach Drosky, Naser, Selent, Burnett, and Shaw plus the 10 Tech runners that were held out this weekend will race next weekend in Louisville.
