David North won matches at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles to lead the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team to a 6-1 win over Furman Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Yellow Jackets improve to 5-1 on the season.
Tech opened the match by capturing the doubles point, winning at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. North and Marko Rajevac teamed to post a 8-6 win over Allen Simms and Andy Sobczyk at No. 1 doubles while Scott Blackmon and Jose Muguruza combined together to notch a 9-8 (7-5) win over Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk at No. 2 doubles. At No. 3 doubles, the tandem of Sukhwa Young and Jordan Delass fell to Scott Kahler and Kevin Lackey, 8-6.
Following doubles play, the Jackets continued on a roll, taking points in five of six singles matches. North started things off with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Maarschalk which was followed by a win by George Gvelesiani at No. 6 singles over Chris Gilli, 6-4, 6-3. After dropping the first set, Rajevac came back to defeat Pauluhn, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2 singles while at No. 4 singles Zachary Rath recorded a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win over Sobczyk. At No. 1 singles, No. 25 Muguruza held on to win over Simmons at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
Tech’s only loss on the afternoon was suffered at No. 5 singles as Delass fell to Stephen Nash, 7-5, 6-3.
The Yellow Jackets will return to action Saturday when they travel to take on Auburn at 1 p.m. in Auburn, Ala.
