BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior pitcher Deck McGuire was named to the 10th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Preseason All-America first team and senior first baseman Tony Plagman to the second team, the NCBWA announced Wednesday.
The two Jackets join six other Atlantic Coast Conference players on the 2010 list, as McGuire along with Florida State sophomore pitcher Sean Gilmartin and junior outfielder Tyler Holt, and Virginia junior outfielder Jarrett Parker headline the first team.
McGuire posted an 11-2 record with a 3.50 ERA while helping lead the Yellow Jackets to an NCAA Tournament berth last season. The tall right-hander from Richmond, Va., struck out 118 batters in 100.1 innings while walking just 41.
In 2009, he became the first ever Yellow Jacket to earn ACC Pitcher of the Year honors and was a finalist for the National Pitcher of the Year. He also earned All-America honors from Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.
Plagman, a 2009 First Team All-ACC honoree, had a career-best season as a junior. The Alpharetta, Ga. native tied for the team-lead with a .354 batting average, and had 16 home runs and 73 RBI. In addition to career-bests in batting average and RBI, he had a career-high 18 doubles.
The senior co-captain chose to return for his senior season after being selected by the New York Yankees in the 2009 MLB draft.
The 2010 season begins Friday, Feb. 19 at 4 p.m. as the Jackets host Missouri State for a three-game series at Russ Chandler Stadium.
