McCormick Stands Fourth After Day One of Heptathlon

ATLANTA–Alex Van Heuven placed fifth in the women’s indoor pentathlon to lead the Georgia Tech women’s track team on the first day of the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.

With just two events completed, the Tech women stand in fifth place in the team standings with four points. Miami leads with 26 points.

Van Heuven, an all-ACC honoree in the outdoor heptathlon, totalled 3,397 points Thursday. Tech’s Ashley McNeil placed 10th in the event.

On the men’s side, Greg McCormick stands fourth (2777 points) after four events of the men’s heptathlon. The senior completed the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump, in which he was first, with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run slated for Friday. Teammate Trevor Crites stands 11th with 2,473 points.

The Tech men failed to score in Thursday’s only completed event, the weight throw, in which Jonathan Chihoski placed ninth with a throw of 54 feet-1.25 inches, followed by Eric Massey in 10th place at 52 feet-0.5 inches.

In the women’s weight throw, Tech’s Dore Madere placed 12th with a throw of 52 feet-4.5 inches.
