ATLANTA – Stephanie McCormick has been named an assistant coach for the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team, Yellow Jacket head coach MaChelle Joseph announced on Thursday.
McCormick is the first new hire for Joseph, who retained Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick as an assistant coach last month. McCormick most recently served as an assistant coach at Charlotte during the past two seasons, working primarily with the 49ers post players, while assisting with recruiting and scouting. During the 2003 season, she helped lead the team to the Conference USA regular season title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
“I’m very excited about having Coach Mac join our staff,” said Joseph. “She has a tremendous amount of experience and has enjoyed a great deal of success during the past two seasons at Charlotte. When I was looking for an assistant coach, I wanted someone that had been a part of a championship team either as a player or coach and Stephanie certainly fits that having been to the NCAA Tournament and winning a conference title at Charlotte.”
Prior to joining the 49ers staff, she was the associate head coach at UNC Wilmington from 1999-2001, after being an assistant coach with the program in 1998. During the 2000 campaign, she helped lead the Seahawks to an 18-12 record, the most wins for the program since 1988.
McCormick began her coaching career in 1995 at Western Carolina, spending three seasons with the Catamounts. As Western’s top recruiter, she signed a pair of All-Southern Conference post players in Karen Mason and LaSha Jackson, both of whom earned second-team honors in 1997.
“She has been a great recruiter at three different levels during her coaching career,” said Joseph. “She has great contacts in the southeast, especially in North Carolina and she is very familiar with the state of Georgia. I think she brings a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to our program.”
A native of High Point, N.C., McCormick starred for four years at Catawba College, where she was the first player in school history to finish their career with over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds. She finished her four years averaging 10.7 points and 10.6 rebounds and still holds the school’s record for career (1244) and single-season (374) rebounding totals. McCormick earned All-South Atlantic Conference and All-District honors as a junior in 1993. She graduated in 1994 from Catawba with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration.
Joseph, who was named head coach on May 19, also announced that current Georgia Tech women’s basketball staffers, Kyle Snipes and Cathie Helmbold, both of whom joined the staff prior to the 2002 season, have assumed new roles with the team, as Snipes has been named the director of women’s basketball operations, while Helmbold will serve as administrative coordinator for the program.
“We are fortunate that Kyle and Cathie, along with Brenda Mock Kirkpatrick, have agreed to stay on and help us continue our success of the past two years,” said Joseph. “Both have a great deal of experience and are committed to helping us win our first ACC Championship.”
