Feb. 2, 2004

ATLANTA-Men’s diving stand out Paul McCarty, women’s track star Shanta Smith and women’s tennis player Lindsey Stauss were named the Wendy’s Georgia Tech Student-Athletes of the Week for Monday, February 2, 2004.

McCarty, a senior from Ypsilanti, Mich., led the Yellow Jackets last weekend with three wins in four events against No. 21 Kentucky and Emory University. McCarty stole the show on Senior Day in the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center by etching his name into Tech’s record book in the one-meter diving event. He set a new school mark on the one-meter board with a career-best score of 335.09. McCarty then registered another career-best on the three-meter board with a score of 352.95. Both marks were NCAA Zone B qualifying standards. Against the Wildcats, McCarty tallied a first-place finish on the one-meter board with a score of 308.77

Smith, a junior from Miami, Fla., tallied top-10 finishes for the 23rd-ranked Yellow Jackets last weekend at the Gator Invitational. Smith registered NCAA provisional marks in the 400 meters and the triple jump. She finished first in the triple jump with her second provisional mark in the event, winning this time with a jump of 42’6.25″. In the 400 meters, Smith took eighth place with a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.77.

Stauss, a freshman from Racine, Wis., helped Tech to a win against tournament host Minnesota in the Minnesota Court Classic. Over the weekend, Stauss posted a perfect 4-0 mark winning both of her doubles matches and both of her singles matches. She did not drop a set in singles play winning 6-2, 6-2 against #14 William & Mary on Saturday, and 6-2, 6-3 against #40 Minnesota on Sunday.
