TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Georgia Tech track & field squad completed the second day of the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships on Saturday at Florida State University, and a school record was broken in the process.

Freshman Bria Matthews set the school record in the long jump, finishing fourth with a mark of 6.47m and earning second-team All-ACC honors. Matthews was the gold medalist in the long jump at the ACC Indoor Championships back in February. Dohjhae Jones also performed well in the long jump, reaching a mark of 5.95m for an eighth-place finish. Matthews and Jones earned six points for Tech’s women.

“We’ve had some great efforts by the women, but just aren’t capitalizing on the scoring opportunities,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “Bria Mathews was outstanding in breaking the school record in the long jump. Donjhae Jones also did fantastic in fighting through some injury issues to score in the long jump. Tomorrow we have some good events for us so we need to take advantage of them.”

On the men’s side, three athletes earned spots in Sunday finals events, including Spencer Allen, who placed fourth in the preliminary of the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.14.

“This was not a perfect day for us, but I was pleased with how we fought throughout the day,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “Spencer Allen and Andreas Ward made the final in the 110m HH – Andreas with a two-tenth PR. And Andres Littig ran a very tough 800m prelim with a 1.10-second PR and made the final as well. One more effort that stood out to me was Alex Grady in the 3000m Steeplechase. This was a big PR for him and I was very proud of his effort tonight. Tomorrow is a big day for us in the TJ, 110m HH, 800m, 5000m, and 4x400m relay.”

Ward posted a personal-best time of 14.44 in the preliminary of the 110m hurdles, while Littig placed seventh with a personal-best time of 1:48.20 in the 800m preliminary. Alex Grady finished 11th with a personal-best time of 9:04.13 in the 3000m Steeplechase.
