Marcelle Earns Trip to NCAA Championships on Day One of Regional

Gainesville, Fla. – Steve Marcelle placed fifth in the men’s discus to lead the Georgia Tech track and field teams on day one of the NCAA East Region Championships at the James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track on the University of Florida campus.

Marcelle, a redshirt freshman, finished the discus a personal-best throw of 180 feet, 3 inches, the third best in school history, to earn a trip to the NCAA Championships. Marcelle will look to also qualify in the shot put on the second day of the regional beginning at 6 p.m.

Sophomore Jacqua Williams led the women after earning a spot in both 100- and 200-meter dash finals that will take place on Saturday. The sophomore sprinter placed seventh overall with a time of 11.53 in the 100m. In the 200m, Williams also crossed the line seventh with a personal-best time of 23.31. The gun will go up for the 100m at 6:40 p.m. and the 200m at 7:35 p.m.

Senior Ashlee Kidd dominated the 400-meter field, coasting across the line in first place with a time of 52.37. The 400m finals are set to begin at 6:50 p.m. as Kidd begins her quest to win her first National Championship.

The Jackets also had a pair of runners qualify for the 100-meter hurdles as senior Fatmata Fofanah and junior Shantia Moss each had top-eight times. Fofanah crossed the line in 13.30 and Moss finished with a time of 13.68. The two will each take their shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships at 6:25 p.m. tomorrow.

The Jackets will resume their quest to qualify for the NCAA Championships when the field events get underway at noon and the running events beginning at 5:30 p.m. Live results for the NCAA East Regional are available at www.gatorzone.com.
