NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Brandon Lasater of the Georgia Tech track and field team won the mile in a sub four-minute time of 3:59.24, breaking Georgia Tech’s school record and outkicking two-time Olympian Nick Symmonds at the Music City Distance Carnival on Vanderbilt’s campus.
Lasater, running unattached in the invitational men’s mile run, broke Brendon Mahoney’s outdoor mile time of 4:00.29 set in 2002. David Krummenacker set the indoor school record of 3:58.62 in 1998.
The Perry, Ga., native’s time is the first outdoor sub four-minute mile in Georgia Tech history and Lasater became the first native born Georgian to ever break four minutes in a mile.
“What a great achievement for Brandon,” head distance coach Alan Drosky said. “After the NCAA East Preliminary Round, where he didn’t advance to the NCAA Nationals, he was a little down. But he realized there were still some things to race for as he prepares to represent Tech at the USA Nationals later in June.
“We’ve had some outstanding competitors in our program over the years, so to take down the record and break four minutes for the first time is a testament to Brandon’s hard work, desire and drive. On top of all that, he wins the race outkicking a two-time Olympian in Nick Symmonds.
Fellow Georgia Tech runner Jeremy Greenwald also competed in the race, crossing the line in 4:08.89.
