May 19, 2010

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech baseball assistant coach Tom Kinkelaar and partner Virginia Coker won the Judge’s Choice Award at the 2010 “Dancing Stars of Atlanta” competition Sunday evening at the Foundry at Puritan Mill.

Kinkelaar, who performed a smooth waltz dance with partner Virginia Coker, received 29 out of a possible 30 points from the judges to edge out Atlanta Falcons defensive end Kroy Biermann and his partner Amber Reich for the title.

“I was to thank everyone who contributed to the cause and supported me throughout the process,” Kinkelaar said. “We were successful in raising a tremendous amount of money for Alzheimer’s, and there is no better feeling than to culminate it with a victory.”

Tech’s assistant coach was one of 10 local Atlanta celebrity competitors’ that paired with 10 professional dancers for the event, which was a benefit to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Association. The group as a whole raised over $144,000 for the Alzheimer’s. Kinkelaar raised nearly $9,000 in donations himself.
