King, Spir Reach Finals of First Futures Event

June 26, 2012

Indian Harbor Beach, Fla. – Georgia Tech’s All-American doubles team of Kevin King and Juan Spir made quite a splash in their first International Tennis Federation Futures event together, reaching the finals of Florida Beer Company Pro Tennis Tournament presented by Revolution Technologies.

Tournament Results and Draw

King and Spir, who won 71 doubles matches together for Georgia Tech and were ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation last spring, fell Monday evening in the rain-delayed finals to the No. 2 seed, Ruben Gonzales of the Philippines and Darian King of Barbados, 6-2, 3-6, (10-4).

The Tech team defeated Siyu Liu and Chuhan Wang of China, 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round before upsetting the top seeded team of Vahid Mirzadeh and Joshua Zavalan (USA), 6-1, 6-4, in the quarterfinals. They faced a familiar team in the semifinals, Virginia stars Alex Domijan and Mitchell Frank, and eliminated them, 6-3, 3-6 (10-5) to earn their spot in the championship match.

King, a Peachtree City, Ga., native who completed his four-year career at Tech this past spring, earned his first paycheck as a professional player. Spir, a rising senior from Medellin, Colombia, cannot accept prize money and has one more year of eligibility at Tech.
