Joseph Receives Contract Extension

Sept. 17, 2007

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech women’s basketball head coach MaChelle Joseph received a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2010-11 season, Director of Athletics Dan Radakovich announced Monday.

Joseph, who just completed her fourth year as the Tech head coach, had two years remaining on her existing contract, which she had signed in May of 2006.

“We are very excited to have MaChelle Joseph continue to lead our program,” Radakovich said. “She has earned this extension and we look forward to great things in the future.”

Joseph, whose four-year record is 62-56, welcomes the highest-rated recruiting class in school history this fall. The class is ranked as high as eighth in the nation by hoopgurlz.com and Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. Headlining the class are two top-20 talents: 6-1 forward Alex Montgomery of Tacoma, Wash., the highest rated signee in the history of the program as the No 15 prospect in the nation, and 5-11 guard-forward Iasia Hemingway, rated No. 20 in the nation.

“I am very excited about the opportunity Dan and Theresa (Wenzel) have given me to continue building this basketball program at one of the finest academic institutions in the country,” Joseph said. “Last season, we were able to successfully navigate unchartered waters with our team and we are anxious to take Georgia Tech to the next level.

“Our administrations commitment to building one of the top women’s basketball programs in the Atlantic Coast Conference is exciting and I am looking forward to being a part of it.”

The Yellow Jackets return four starters from last year’s squad that posted a Georgia Tech Division-I best 21-12 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history. Top returnees include seniors Chioma Nnamaka (13.0 ppg, 4.7 rpg) and Janie Mitchell (14.5 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and junior Jacqua Williams (7.7 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 2.8 spg).

Joseph, 37, is a 1992 graduate of Purdue University, where she was an All-American and one of the top players in Big Ten history. In addition to her four seasons as the Georgia Tech head coach, she has 11 years experience as an assistant coach, including two seasons with the Yellow Jackets as well as stints at Illinois, Purdue and Auburn.
