WICHITA, Kan . – Georgia Tech sophomore Joey Bart was named to the official watch list for the 2017 Johnny Bench Award, presented by BaseballSavings.com. on Thursday.
The Johnny Bench Award is given to the nation’s top catcher at the NCAA Division I level each season by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission.
Semifinalists for the award will be announced on May 17, finalists on June 5, and the award will be presented on June 29 at the 20th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet.
Bart is off to a hot start in 2017, as the second-year Jacket is hitting .447 (21-of-47) with seven home runs, three doubles, 19 RBIs, 13 runs scored and two stolen bases. Bart, who also played in all 11 games thus far this season for Tech, has posted a .957 slugging percentage and a .500 on-base percentage.
He enters play this weekend ranked second in the nation in home runs (7), fourth in total bases (45), seventh in slugging percentage (.957) and 15th in RBIs (19).
This past week, Bart was named the National Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball and the ACC Player of the Week on Monday, March 6. He added Perfect Game/Rawlings Player of the Week honors on Tuesday, March 7.
