COLUMBUS, Ga. – Redshirt senior Jen Yee went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI as the No. 11/8 Georgia Tech Softball team (12-2) defeated No. 18/20 Louisiana (7-5), 7-1 Saturday night at the Leadoff Classic. The home run for Yee was her third two-run home run of the day as she hit two this morning against Arkansas. She has now hit safely in all 14 games this season and leads the team with nine round-trippers.
Freshman Hope Rush (6-2) picked up the win as she gave up just the one earned run on six hits. She walked three and struck out two. At the plate, she was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Sophomore Kelsi Weseman scored two runs for the Yellow Jackets, while junior Kristine Priebe had two hits. Junior Jessica Weaver walked three times and scored a pair of runs.
After both teams squandered big scoring chances in the first inning, Tech broke through for three unearned runs against Louisiana pitcher Donna Bourgeois. With the bases loaded and two outs, Yee hit a ground ball to shortstop. Megan Granger fielded, but her throw to second went into right field and two runs scored. Rush followed with a RBI single to make it 3-0.
Louisiana manufactured a run back in the bottom of the second inning, but that would be it against Rush. The Cajuns used two infield hits with a fly out and stolen base to score the run. Rush got out of the inning without any further damage and the Cajuns left eight runners on base.
The score remained 3-1 until the sixth when Yee took the first pitch she saw over the fence for an opposite field home run. Weseman, who was hit by a pitch, scored ahead of Yee who actually saw her season average drop to .605 with the three hit game.
With a 5-1 lead, the Yellow Jackets gave Rush some more insurance in the seventh as both Yee and Rush had two-out RBI singles.
Rush worked a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to secure Tech’s second win of the day.
The Yellow Jackets wrap up the 2010 NFCA Leadoff Classic tomorrow morning with a 10 a.m. against vs. Iowa. Live audio and stats for every game is available at www.RamblinWreck.com.
