Jackets Wrap-Up ITA Southeast Regionals

FINAL DRAWS

THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech women’s tennis team wrapped up play on Sunday at the ITA Southeast Regionals. Kenya Jones competed in the main draw singles quarterfinals and doubles semifinals with teammate Dalila Said.

Facing a familiar foe in the main draw quarterfinals, junior Kenya Jones came back from a 3-1 deficit in the first set against Florida’s Ida Jarlskog to knot the opening stanza at 4-apiece. But Jarlskog held to take the first set, 6-4, and claimed the match win with a 6-2 second set victory.

The Jackets returned to the court under the lights Sunday night to play main draw doubles semifinals against Florida’s McCartney Kessler/Victoria Emma. In the first set, Jones and Said took a 5-4 edge, but Florida knotted it up to force a tiebreak. In the breaker, the Jackets snagged a 4-2 edge, but the Gators won the next three points to grab a 5-4 advantage and closed it out, 7-5. Florida came out in the second set with a strong 5-2 lead, but the Jackets fought back to a 5-4 tally. The comeback was short-lived as Florida took the match with a 6-4 second set win.

In the consolation singles quarterfinals, freshman Valeriya Deminova rolled past Georgia State’s Arielle Nealy, 6-3, 6-1, to take on Ana Oparenovic of Florida State. Deminova faced a quick turnaround in singles action, pushing Oparenovic in the first set to a tiebreak, but fell, 7-6 (4). The Seminole took the match with a 6-1 second set victory.

Also competing in the backdraw, Nadia Gizdova pocketed a straight-set win over Alara Hollyfield (Mercer). In a first set tiebreak, Gizdova trailed 6-3, but bounced back to take the set with an 8-6 tiebreak win. The junior cruised in the second set, 6-3, to win the match.
