Jackets Win 10 of 13 Matches on Day One of Michigan Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The fourth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team won a total of 10 matches–seven singles and three doubles–on day one of competition in the Michigan Invitational, which is being contested at the University of Michigan this weekend.

The Jackets began the day by playing eight matches against players from the 17th-ranked University of California team, as well as one against the University of Michigan, in singles action. Kristi Miller, ranked seventh in the nation in singles, defeated Cal’s 19th-ranked Zsuzsanna Fodor, 6-1, 6-2, and Lyndsay Shosho, the country’s No. 71 singles player, downed the Bears’ 14th-ranked Suzie Babos by a 7-5, 7-5 score. No. 25 Tarryn Rudman dispatched Cal’s No. 83 Claire Ilcinkas, 6-1, 6-1 while 35th-ranked Kelly Anderson dropped 92nd-ranked Cristina Visico, 6-3, 6-2. Anderson followed up her win against Visico with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Michigan’s Allie Shafner in the afternoon session. Rounding out the singles winners for Georgia Tech were Whitney McCray, who stopped Jessica Shue, 6-4, 7-6 (6), and Alison Silverio, who came back to defeat No. 61 Stephanie Kusano, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Tech then took three of four doubles matches Friday evening, two against tandems from the University of Michigan and the other against a team from Cal. Miller and Shosho, ranked 26th in the nation, teamed together to defeat U-M’s Allie Shafner and Kara Delicata, 8-6, while Rudman and Silverio played Michigan’s duo of Elizabeth Exon and Lindsey Howard, and defeated the Wolverine tandem, 8-4. Christy Striplin and Kacie Anson rounded out the Tech doubles victors when they earned an 8-3 victory over Cal’s duo of Kusano and Ilcinkas.

The Jackets will continue play in the Michigan Invitational on Saturday, playing the LSU Tigers in singles at 12:30 p.m. and meeting teams from the University of California in doubles at 3:30 p.m.
