BLACKSBURG, Va. – Georgia Tech baseball was unable to match the offensive production in the series finale, falling 9-2 to Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon at Atlantic Union Bank Park.
The Yellow Jackets (20-16, 7-11 ACC) continued to battle on the mound without any of its starting pitchers from Opening Weekend available due to injury as the Hokies (21-12, 8-9 ACC) were able to hit five home runs on the day.
Getting his first start of the season was usual closer RHP Terry Busse. Busse (1-2) went 3.0 innings with four runs scoring against him on six hits before RHP Jackson Vaughan went the next two, surrendering four runs on five hits. LHP Josiah Siegel then closed the final three innings, allowing just one run on two hits with three strikeouts.
At the plate, Tech managed 12 hits on the day, but left 12 runners on base, only able to bring in the two runs, thanks to a Jadyn Jackson single up the middle in the fourth and a Tyler Minnick solo home run. Leading the effort would be Stephen Reid, John Giesler, Minnick and Angelo Dispigna, who finished with two hits apiece.
Virginia Tech was led by RHP Drue Hackenberg (3-4) on the mound, who went 6.0 innings and allowed one run on eight hits. David Bryant led at the plate with two home runs.
Georgia Tech returns home briefly for crosstown battle against Georgia State on Tuesday, April 18. First pitch is set for 8 p.m. and will be broadcast live nationally on ACC Network.
Postgame Notes:
- Kristian Campbell recorded a hit in his 20th-straight game, becoming the 14th Yellow Jacket to hold a 20-game hitting streak and first since Kel Johnson hit in 22-consecutive games in 2016. Only three Jackets have accomplished the feat in the last 10 years as Kyle Wren also hit in 20-straight games in 2013.
