Jackets Trounce Trojans, 6-0

TROY, Ala. – Georgia Tech softball (16-12, 2-4 ACC) took care of Troy (21-8-1, 2-0-1 SBC) on the road, cruising to a 6-0 victory on Wednesday night at the Troy Softball Complex. Junior first baseman Abby Hughes and senior right hander Chandler Dennis powered the Yellow Jackets past the Trojans as Hughes was responsible for every run scored in the contest while Dennis earned her second complete game shutout of the season.

Hughes had a monster day, racking up career-highs with five RBI and two runs scored to plate every run for the Jackets. Going 3-for-4 overall on the day with a pair of doubles and a home run, she also set or tied career bests in each of the aforementioned categories.

Dennis (10-4) pitched a gem, allowing just three hits with five strikeouts on the day as she tossed her third complete game of the season allowing no earned runs. The composed hurler now owns a five-inning complete game with no earned runs along with her two complete-game shutouts through seven innings.

The Yellow Jackets delivered their initial blow in the top of the second, first putting a pair on as the Trojans dinged the leadoff batter before junior third baseman Mallorie Black singled. Hughes stepped to the plate next, opening her stellar day with a three-run bomb, marking her second dinger of the season.

The same trio of Jackets made noise in the top of the third as Tech started the inning with back-to-back singles. With junior designated player Sara Beth Allen and Black occupying first and second once more, Hughes stepped in and splintered a two-RBI double for a 5-0 Yellow Jacket lead.

As Hughes remained responsible for every run in the contest, she increased the Tech advantage by one more in the fifth as she roped a double that turned into a little league home run thanks to a pair of Trojan miscues. Dennis slammed the door from there, allowing no hits and just one walk for the final three innings to secure a 6-0 Tech triumph.
