ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s and women’s track and field teams will compete in the NCAA East Region Championships, Friday and Saturday, May 27-28, in Randall’s Island, N.Y. The top five individuals in each event will advance to the outdoor NCAA Championships, June 8-11, in Sacramento, Calif.
A total of 18 Yellow Jackets will compete at the outdoor region meet, nine men and women. The men include seniors Brian Ford (400), Eric Massey (hammer), Neil McDonagh (1500), Jonathan Spillman (shot put) and Montrell Person (110m HH), sophomores Cristan Duvall (Steeplechase) and James Lemons II (triple jump), along with freshmen Derek Hoye (800) and Jerome Miller (high jump).
The women that will be competing this weekend will be seniors Dore’ Madere (discus) and Dana Rogers (100m HH, 4×100), juniors Brandy Depland (triple jump), Chaunte Howard (high jump, long jump) and Andriane Lapsley (100, 200, 4×100), sophomores Fatmata Fofonah (100m HH) and Ashlee Kidd (400, 4×100) and freshmen twin sisters Shantia Moss (100m HH) and Shantrell Moss (100, 4×100).
Howard, a native of Riverside, Calif., is the defending champion at the NCAA East Region meet and holds the World’s top mark for 2005 in the women’s high jump at 6 feet, 4 and ¾ inches. Howard will also compete in the long jump with a qualifying mark of 20 feet, 3 inches.
Person, a native of Merriville, Ind., earned All-America honors in the 110-meter high hurdles last season and finished third at last year’s outdoor region meet. He currently holds the second best mark in the region with a time of 13.71.
Kidd, Lapsley and Rogers all qualified for the outdoor NCAA meet last year with a third-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay at the NCAA East Region Championships. Shantrell Moss will join them on that relay team, which holds the meet’s fourth fastest time at 44.26. Kidd and Lapsley rank third in the 400- and 100-meter dash events, with times of 52.29 and 11.36, respectively, while Rogers stands fifth in the 100m hurdles (13.27).
