Jackets Topple UTEP, 10-1 (5), at Buzz Classic

MARIETTA, Ga. – Senior Christine Sheridan went 2-for-3 with a home run and three runs batted in and freshman Lacey Richardson (3-1) worked all five innings, allowing two hits and struck out a career-high seven to lead Georgia Tech (14-4) past UTEP, 10-1 (5), in the first round of bracket play in the Atlanta Buzz Classic Tournament at Al Bishop Softball Complex.

Sophomore Aileen Morales went 1-for-2, and drove in two runs to pace the Yellow Jackets offensively.

The Yellow Jackets scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning as freshman Whitney Haller and senior Amy Hosier drove in runs as Tech led 2-0.

Tech plated three runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by senior Christine Sheridan’s two-run home run to left-center field to put the Jackets up 5-0.

The Jackets scored five more runs in the bottom of the third inning on six hits as junior Kristina Hull, Morales, Sheridan and sophomore Kacey Ivey drove in runs for the Rambling Wreck.

UTEP’s Sarah Ramirez homered in the top of the fourth inning for the Miners. That wrapped up the scoring as Tech rolled 10-1 in five innings.

Tech scored 10 runs, on 11 hits and had no errors, while UTEP scored one run, on two hits and had two errors.

Tech will play the winner of No. 5 seed Wisconsin and No. 12 seed South Dakota State on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. in the quarterfinals. For a complete list of teams and schedule information, go to Tournament Central.
