Jackets Topped by No. 5 Tigers

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball was upended by No. 5 Clemson, 9-1 (5), on Friday night at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets surrendered a five spot in the top of the first and were unable to recover, despite a few efficient bats on the day.

Senior utility player Emma Kauf swatted her sixth double of the season to tie the team lead as she went 1-for-2 on the day with a walk, scoring Tech’s lone run. Junior third baseman Mallorie Black drove her in, going 1-for-2 with an RBI single and a walk. Junior designated player Sara Beth Allen also reached base twice on a pair of walks.

Three Jackets spent time in the circle through the evening, with senior hurler Blake Neleman (4-6) getting the start and receiving the loss. Sophomore right hander Sophia Voyles and fellow sophomore reliever Kinsey Norton also got some work as Voyles tossed an inning while Norton finished off the final 3.2 frames.

Clemson (30-1, 7-0 ACC) blew the doors open in the top of the first, stringing together five runs on a pair of two-run bombs and an RBI single. Georgia Tech (16-13, 2-5 ACC) fought back with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame as a single from Black scored Kauf, but the Tigers moved back ahead by five with a solo shot in the second to take a 6-1 advantage. Clemson tacked on two more runs in the fourth with a double that scored a pair, then delivered the final blow with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, coming away with the 9-1 win.
