Jackets Top Northwestern, 4-3

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis won four singles matches Sunday afternoon to rebound from dropping the doubles point and collect a 4-3 victory over Northwestern. The win pushed Tech to 1-3 on the season.

DOUBLES
The decision for the doubles point came down to court two after the Yellow Jackets and Wildcats split the first two matches. Northwestern took court three as Justine Leong and Christina Hand opened with a 4-2 lead over Monika Dedaj and Mahak Jain, and sealed the win, 6-3. But Carol Lee and Kate Sharabura evened the doubles field with a victory on court one. The doubles teams stood on serve at 3-3 before Lee and Sharabura won the next three games to pocket a 6-3 decision and improve to 3-0 in dual play and 8-2 on the season.

Competing on court two, Gia Cohen and Ruth Marsh held a 5-4 lead against Clarissa Hand and Maria Shusharina, but the Wildcats rallied back to force a tiebreak at 6-6. Northwestern clinched the doubles point, winning the tiebreak, 7-3, for the early 1-0 match lead.

SINGLES
Northwestern’s lead was short-lived, however, as Georgia Tech won the first four singles matches to clinch the victory at 4-1. On court one, Lee knotted the score at 1-all, winning her 10th singles victory of the season. The sophomore opened a 4-1 lead against No. 94 Clarissa Hand in the first set, and rolled to a 6-2, 6-2 victory to put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard.

Rosie Garcia Gross gave Tech its first lead of the match, taking court four in straight sets against Leong. Garcia Gross extended a 3-2 edge against Leong into a 5-2 lead and took the first set, 6-3. The Jacket sealed the match with a 6-2 second set to give Tech a 2-1 match lead. Sharabura cushioned Tech’s lead on court six, defeating McColgan, 6-4, 6-3. The freshman was on serve at 4-4 in the first set before winning the next two games and cruised to a 6-3 second set to setup a 3-1 match advantage for the Jackets.

Jain clinched the match for Georgia Tech at the three seed. Jain improved to 8-4 overall on the season, collecting her second dual singles win as the sophomore defeated Pratt, 6-3, 6-2, to clinch the match at 4-1 for Georgia Tech.

Northwestern took the final two singles matches on courts two and five to account for the final 4-3 tally.
