Tech Tidbits
Georgia Tech leads the ACC and ranks 10th nationally this season with a total of 315 hits entering play this weekend versus Florida State. In fact, the Jackets are the only team in the ACC with over 300 hits heading into conference action this weekend.
This weekend marks the second-straight weekend in which the Jackets will host an ACC foe with a hall of fame coach from the state of Florida. Georgia Tech hosted Jim Morris and the Miami Hurricanes last weekend and welcome Florida State and head coach Mike Martin to The Flats this weekend. Tech is 3-0 versus teams from the Sunshine State this season having swept Miami one week ago (March 30 – April 1).
The Yellow Jackets have three players in Chase Murray, Tristin English and Joey Bart that rank in the top 10 in the ACC in a number of offensive categories this season. Murray leads the ACC in hitting (.400) and in hits (46), while ranking second overall in runs scored (29). English leads the ACC in RBIs (39), is third in total bases (65) and tied for sixth in hits (40) on the year. Bart is second in total bases (70), third in home runs (8), fifth in slugging percentage (.625) tied for sixth in hits (40) and eighth in hitting (.357) on the season.
The Jackets’ pitching staff has issued just 3.4 walks per nine innings this season. The pitchers have walked just a total of 96 batters this season, an average of under four walks per game (3.3) on the year.
Tech will look to snap a five-game losing streak to the Seminoles this weekend. Florida State swept the Yellow Jackets in the three-game regular season series in 2016 in Tallahassee, Fla., before defeating GT 6-1 in the 2016 ACC Championship Tournament. Tech’s last win over the Seminoles was a 12-4 win at home in game two of the three-game series back in 2014.
Six has been the magic number for the Jackets this season, as Tech is 12-5 when scoring six runs or more in a game. The Jackets are also 13-3 when holding its opponent to less than six runs in a contest. On the flip side, GT is just 5-7 when scoring less than six runs and 4-9 when giving up six runs or more.
The Week 7 ACC Pitcher of the Week was Tech’s own Xzavion Curry. He improved to an ACC-best 6-0 on the season with a 6-1 win over Miami last Friday night. The sophomore from Atlanta struck out a career-high 12 batters in 8.0 innings, allowing just one run, one walk, and six singles in his fourth quality start of the season. Curry’s 12 K’s were the most strikeouts by a Georgia Tech pitcher since Buck Farmer fanned 14 batters in the Opening Day win over Akron on Feb. 15, 2013.
In eight of the Yellow Jackets’ 17 wins this season, the defense has not made an error in the field. Tech is 8-2 overall this season when not committing an error defensively, which includes going error-less in the three-game sweep over Miami in ACC play last weekend.
Georgia Tech has played a total of nine games thus far this season against top-25 foes, posting a 2-7 record overall. Tech is 1-0 at home versus the top 25 this season. The Jackets have wins over No. 6 Auburn (March 20) and at No. 6 NC State (March 23). However, Tech has three road losses at then-No. 6 Clemson (March 9-10), one on the road at then-No. 13 Auburn (March 13), two more at then-No. 6 NC State (March 23-25) and one midweek road loss at No. 17 Georgia (April 3).
The Yellow Jackets are one of just 10 teams across the nation this season to have 11 different players or more hit at least one home run: Tennessee Tech (15), Elon (13), Mercer (12), Arkansas (12), Florida Atlantic (12), South Carolina (12), Davidson (11), Wichita State (11), Vanderbilt (11) and Georgia Tech (11).
On Deck
Tech play two midweek games next week, as the Jackets are on the road at Mercer on Tuesday night, April 10, at 6 p.m., before returning home to host Georgia State on Wednesday night, April 11, at 6 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium.
